✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed nine [years] in Madinah without performing Hajj. Then he announced to the people to set out. When he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, he prayed at Dhu al-Hulayfah. Asma’ bt. Umays gave birth to Muhammad b. Abi Bakr, so she sent word to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said, “Perform ghusl, bind a cloth, and enter ihram.” She did so. When the chest of the Messenger of God’s mount settled on the back of al-Bayda’, he entered ihram, and we entered ihram, not knowing it except as Hajj, and for that we had set out. The Messenger of God was among us, the Qur’an was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation; he only did what he was commanded. Jabir said: I looked before me, behind me, to my right, and to my left as far as I could see, and the people were on foot and riding. The Messenger of God ﷺ began to say the talbiyah: “Here I am, O God, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner. Here I am. Indeed, praise and blessing are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.” When we arrived in Makkah, he began by touching the corner, then he walked briskly for three circuits and walked normally for four. When he finished his tawaf, he went to the Maqam and said, “God said: ‘And take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.’” So he prayed two rak’ahs behind the Maqam of Ibrahim. Ja’far said: My father said, “He recited in them the surah of Tawhid: ‘Say: O disbelievers’ and ‘Say: He is God, One.’” He said: “He did not mention that from Jabir.” Then he went to the corner and touched it, then he went to al-Safa and said, “We begin with what God began with: ‘Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of God.’” He climbed al-Safa until the House was visible to him, said “God is great” three times, and said: “There is no god but God alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death. In His hand is all good, and He has power over all things” three times. Then he supplicated. Then he descended from al-Safa and walked until, when his feet reached the bottom of the valley, he walked briskly, and when his feet emerged from the bottom of the valley, he walked to al-Marwah. He climbed al-Marwah until the House was visible to him, and said the same as he had said at al-Safa. He performed seven circuits and said, “Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal with him should exit ihram, and whoever has one should remain in ihram. Had I not brought a sacrificial animal, I would have exited ihram. If I had known at the beginning of my affair what I know now, I would have entered ihram for Umrah.” He said: Ali arrived from Yemen, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “With what did you enter ihram, O Ali?” He said, “I said, ‘O God, I enter ihram with what Your Messenger enters ihram.’” He said, “I have a sacrificial animal, so do not exit ihram.” Ali said: I entered upon Fatimah, and she had applied kohl and worn dyed clothes. I said, “Who ordered you to do this?” She said, “My father ordered me.” He said: Ali used to say in Iraq: “I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, agitated against Fatimah, seeking confirmation of what she said.” He said, “She has spoken the truth; I ordered her.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sacrificed one hundred camels, sixty-three of them with his own hand, and Ali sacrificed the rest. Then he took a piece from each camel, cooked them together, and they ate some of the meat and drank some of the broth. Suraqah b. Malik b. Ju’shum said, “O Messenger of God, is this for this year of ours or forever?” He said, “No, rather forever. Umrah has entered into Hajj.” And he interlaced his fingers.
