'Abd Allah b. Rabah al-Ansari, whom the Ansar called faqih (juries), came to us from Medina, and reported us on the authority of Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition consisting of the chief Companions. He then narrated the same story, saying Nothing awakened us except the rising sun. We stoop up in bewilderment, for our prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: Wait a little, wait a little. When the sun rose high, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Those who sued to observer the two rak'ahs of Fajr prayer (sunnah prayer before obligatory prayer) should observe them. Then those who used to observe and those who would not observe stood up and said prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to call for prayer; the call for prayer was made accordingly. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and led us in prayer. When he turned away (from the prayer) he said: We thank Allah for the fact that we were not engaged in any wordily affairs which detained us from our prayer. Instead our souls were in the hands of Allah. He released them whenever He wished. If any one of you gets morning prayer tomorrow at its proper time, he should offer a similar prayer as an atonement.

machine translationʿAlī b. Naṣr narrated to us, Wahb b. Jarīr narrated to us, al-Aswad b. Shaybān narrated to us, Khālid b. Sumayr narrated to us, he said: ʿAbdullāh b. Rabāḥ al-Anṣārī came to us from Medina, and the Anṣār used to have him teach them jurisprudence. He narrated to us, saying: Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, narrated to me, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent the army of the commanders, with this story. He said: Nothing woke us except the sun having risen, so we got up alarmed for our prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Gently, gently." Until, when the sun had risen high, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever among you prays the two units of the dawn prayer, let him pray them." So those who used to pray them stood, and those who did not used to pray them also stood and prayed them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the call to prayer be made, and it was called, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and led us in prayer. When he finished he said: "Indeed, we praise Allah that we were not engaged in any worldly matter that distracted us from our prayer; rather our souls were in the hand of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and He sent them back whenever He willed. So whoever among you reaches the morning prayer tomorrow in good condition, let him pray with it the like of it."

machine translationIn sum, Khālid b. Sumayr made errors (wahima) in this hadith in three places: the first, in his words "the army of the commanders"; the second, in his words "whoever among you prays the two units of the dawn prayer," etc.; and the third, in his words "let him make up with it the like of it."

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationNo trustworthy narrator corroborated Khālid on this narration, meaning his words: "whoever this prayer overtakes tomorrow morning, let him pray with it the like of it."

  • Shuayb al-Arnaut

machine translationIts narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt), except that its text contains two errors: the first, in his words "in the army of the commanders," which is the army of the Battle of Mu'tah, whereas the correct position is that this story took place during the Battle of Khaybar. The second, in his words "let him make up with it the like of it," whereas the correct wording is: "let him pray it the next day at its time."
