I said to the Prophet ﷺ: Your old and astray uncle has died. He said: Go and bury your father, and then do not do anything until you come to me. So I went, buried him and came to him. He ordered me (to take a bath), so I took a bath, and he prayed for me.

  • al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about this hadith and said: Shuʿbah, al-Thawrī, Isrāʾīl, Sharīk, Zuhayr, Qays, Warqāʾ and Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah b. Kaʿb, from ʿAlī. Al-Ḥusayn b. Wāqid and Abū Ḥamzah al-Sukkarī contradicted them, narrating it from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Ḥārith, from ʿAlī, and they erred in mentioning al-Ḥārith. He mentioned other differences about it besides this. He said: The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is the statement of al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah and those who followed them, from Abū Isḥāq, from Nājiyah b. Kaʿb, from ʿAlī. Likewise Furāt al-Qazzāz narrated it from Nājiyah b. Kaʿb as well.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe gist of al-Bayhaqī's statement is that it is weak (ḍaʿīf), and the reason for its weakness is not made clear.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThis is not established from Abū Isḥāq; the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is the statement of al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah and those who followed them.
