✧ Taking the jizyah from wine

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ قَالَ:
بَلَغَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ أَنَّ عُمَّالَهَ يَأْخُذُونَ الْجِزْيَةَ مِنَ الْخَمْرِ، فَنَاشَدَهُمْ ثَلَاثًا، فَقَالَ بِلَالٌ: إِنَّهُمْ لَيَفْعَلُونَ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: " فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا، وَلَكِنْ وَلُّوهُمْ بَيْعَهَا؛ فَإِنَّ الْيَهُودَ حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّحُومُ فَبَاعُوهَا، وَأَكَلُوا أَثْمَانَهَا "
Translation
✧ It reached Umar b. al-Khattab that his governors were taking jizyah from wine, so he adjured them three times. Bilal said: "They indeed do that." He said: "Do not do that, but put them in charge of selling it; for the Jews were forbidden fats, yet they sold them and consumed their price."
