عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ:
لَمَّا اسْتُخْلِفَ عُمَرُ نَزَعَ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ، فَأَمَّرَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ، وَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ بِعَهْدِهِ وَهُوَ بِالشَّامِ يَوْمَ الْيَرْمُوكِ، فَمَكَثَ الْعَهْدُ مَعَ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ شَهْرَيْنِ لَا يُعَرِّفُهُ إِلَى خَالِدٍ حَيَاءً مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ خَالِدٌ: " أَخْرِجْ أَيُّهَا الرَّجُلُ عَهْدَكَ نَسْمَعُ لَكَ وَنُطِيعُ، فَلَعَمْرِي لَقَدْ مَاتَ أَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَيْنَا وَوُلِّيَ أَبْغَضُ النَّاسِ إِلَيْنَا. فَكَانَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ عَلَى الْخَيْلِ
Translation
✧ When Umar was made caliph, he dismissed Khalid b. al-Walid and appointed Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and sent him his appointment while he was in Syria on the day of al-Yarmuk. The appointment remained with Abu Ubaydah for two months without him informing Khalid of it, out of shyness before him. Khalid said: 'Bring out your document, O man; we will hear and obey you. By my life, the most beloved of people to us has died, and the most hated of people to us has been put in charge.' Abu Ubaydah was over the cavalry.
