Translation
✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj b. Ilat said: O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Makkah and family there, and I want to go to them. Am I free from blame if I disparage you or say something? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ allowed him to say whatever he wished. When he arrived, he went to his wife and said: Gather what you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muhammad ﷺ and his companions, for they have been raided and their wealth taken. That spread through Makkah, and the Muslims were dismayed, while the polytheists showed joy and delight. The news reached al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, and he sat down, unable to rise. Mamar said: Uthman al-Jazari reported to me from Miqsam: He took a son of his who resembled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, named Qutham, lay down, placed him on his chest, and said: My beloved Qutham, resembling the one with the well-shaped nose, the prophet of the Lord of blessings, in spite of whoever is spiteful. Thabit said: Anas said: Then he sent a slave of his to al-Hajjaj, saying: What have you brought, and what are you doing? What Allah has promised is better than what you have brought. Al-Hajjaj b. Ilat said: Convey peace to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to be alone in one of his houses so I may come to him, for the news is what will please him. His slave came to him, and when he reached the door of the house, he said: Rejoice, O Abu al-Fadl. Al-Abbas jumped up in joy and kissed him between the eyes. The slave told him what al-Hajjaj said, and he freed him. Then al-Hajjaj came and told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had conquered Khaybar and taken their wealth as spoils, and the portions of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, had fallen upon their wealth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had chosen Safiyyah bt. Huyayy for himself, and gave her the choice between freeing her and marrying her or sending her to her family, and she chose that he free her and marry her. But I came for wealth I had here, which I wanted to collect and take away, so I asked permission of the Messenger of Allah, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished, and keep it hidden from me for three days, then mention what occurs to you. His wife gathered what she had of jewelry and goods and gave it to him, and he departed with it. After three days, al-Abbas came to al-Hajjaj's wife and said: What has your husband done? She told him he had left on such-and-such a day and said: May Allah not disgrace you, O Abu al-Fadl. What reached you has been hard on us. He said: Yes, may Allah not disgrace me, and by Allah's praise it was only what we loved. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, opened Khaybar to His Messenger ﷺ, and the portions of Allah, Exalted, fell upon their wealth, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiyyah for himself. If you need your husband, then join him. She said: I think by Allah you are truthful. He said: By Allah, I am truthful, and the matter is as I told you. Then he went to the gatherings of Quraysh, and when he passed by them they said: May nothing but good befall you, O Abu al-Fadl. He said: Nothing but good has befallen me, by Allah's praise. Al-Hajjaj b. Ilat told me that Allah opened Khaybar to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the portions of Allah fell in it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiyyah for himself. He asked me to keep it hidden for three days; he only came to take his wealth, and he has nothing here, then he will go. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, turned back the distress that had been upon the Muslims onto the polytheists, and the Muslims who had entered their houses in grief came out and went to al-Abbas, and he told them the news. The Muslims rejoiced, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, returned whatever distress, anger, or sorrow there had been onto the polytheists.
