He heard the last sermon of ʿUmar, may God have mercy on him, when he sat on the pulpit of the Prophet ﷺ, on the day after the Messenger of God ﷺ died. He said: ʿUmar recited the testimony of faith while Abū Bakr was silent and did not speak. Then ʿUmar said: "To proceed: I said a statement, and it was not as I said. By God, I did not find the statement I made in the Book of God, the Exalted, nor in any covenant that the Messenger of God ﷺ made with me. But I was hoping that the Messenger of God ﷺ would live until he outlived us – meaning by that, until he would be the last of them. If Muḥammad has died, God has placed among you a light by which you are guided: this is the Book of God, so hold fast to it and you will be guided to that to which God guided Muḥammad ﷺ. Then, Abū Bakr, may God have mercy on him, is the companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the second of the two, and he is the most deserving of people to manage your affairs. So rise and pledge allegiance to him." A group of them had already pledged allegiance to him before that in the Saqīfah of Banū Sāʿidah, and the general pledge of allegiance took place at the pulpit.
