Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq entered the mosque while ʿUmar was addressing the people. He went on until he reached the house in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died, which was in the house of ʿĀʾishah. He uncovered the face of the Prophet from the striped Yemeni cloak (burd ḥibarah) in which he was wrapped, and looked at the face of the Prophet ﷺ. Then he bent over him and kissed him. Then he said: "By Allah, Allah will not bring two deaths upon you. You have died the death after which you will never die again." Then Abū Bakr went out to the mosque, while ʿUmar was speaking to the people. Abū Bakr said to him: "Sit down, ʿUmar." But he refused to sit. He spoke to him two or three times, but he refused to sit. So Abū Bakr stood up and recited the testimony of faith (tashahhud), and the people turned to Abū Bakr and left ʿUmar. When Abū Bakr had finished his testimony, he said: "To proceed: whoever worshipped Muḥammad, then Muḥammad has died; and whoever among you worships Allah, then Allah is Ever-Living and does not die." Then he recited this verse: ﴿وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ ﴾, the whole verse. When Abū Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, recited it, the people became certain of the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they took it up from Abū Bakr, until one of the people said: they had not known that this verse had been revealed until Abū Bakr recited it.
