✧ Jihad of the Elderly, No Emigration After the Conquest, and Fulfilling Covenants

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُوقَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا، قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ:

رَجُلٌ أَسَرَهُ الدَّيْلَمُ فَقَالُوا: نُرْسِلُكَ وَتُعْطِينَا عَهْدًا وَمِيثَاقًا عَلَى أَنْ تَبْعَثَ إِلَيْنَا كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَفْعَلْ أَتَاهُمْ بِنَفْسِهِ، وَإِنَّهُ لَا يَجِدُ، فَكَيْفَ تَأَمُرُهُ ؟ قَالَ: يَذْهَبُ إِلَيْهِمْ، قَالَ: إِنَّهُمْ أَهْلُ شِرْكٍ، قَالَ: يَفِي بِالْعَهْدِ، قَالَ: إِنَّهُمْ أَهْلُ شِرْكٍ، قَالَ: يَفِي بِالْعَهْدِ لَهُمْ ﴿إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ مَسْئُولا ﴾

Translation

✧ A man was taken captive by the Daylam. They said: “We will release you and you give us a covenant and pact that you will send to us such and such; if he does not do it, he will come to them himself.” Indeed, he cannot find it. So how do you command him? He said: “He should go to them.” He said: “They are people of polytheism.” He said: “He should fulfill the covenant.” He said: “They are people of polytheism.” He said: “He should fulfill the covenant to them, for the covenant will be asked about.”
