عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ:
مَرَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ بِقَوْمٍ وَهُمْ يَذْكُرُونَ سَرِيَّةً هَلَكَتْ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: هُمْ شُهَدَاؤُهُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: لَهُمْ مَا احْتَسَبُوا، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: " مَا تَذْكُرُونَ ؟ " قَالُوا: نَذْكُرُ هَؤُلَاءِ، فَمِنَّا مَنْ يَقُولُ: قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، وَمِنَّا مَنْ يَقُولُ: مَا احْتَسَبُوا، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: إِنَّ مِنَ النَّاسِ نَاسًا يُقَاتِلُونَ رِيَاءً، وَمِنَ النَّاسِ نَاسٌ يُقَاتِلُونَ ابْتِغَاءَ الدُّنْيَا، وَمِنَ النَّاسِ نَاسٌ يُقَاتِلُونَ إِذَا رَهَقَهُمُ الْقِتَالُ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا غَيْرَهُ، وَمِنَ النَّاسِ نَاسٌ يُقَاتِلُونَ حَمِيَّةً، وَمِنَ النَّاسِ نَاسٌ يُقَاتِلُونَ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ اللهِ، فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الشُّهَدَاءُ، وَإِنَّ كُلَّ نَفْسٍ تُبْعَثُ عَلَى مَا تَمُوتُ عَلَيْهِ، إِنَّهَا لَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي قُتِلَ بِأَنَّ لَهُ، أَنَّهُ قَدْ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ
Translation
✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb passed by some people who were mentioning an expedition that had perished. Some of them said: "They are its martyrs, in Paradise," while others said: "They have what they hoped for." ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: "What are you mentioning?" They said: "We mention these people. Some of us say they were killed in the path of God, and some of us say they did not hope for reward." ʿUmar said: "Among people are those who fight for show, and among people are those who fight seeking worldly gain, and among people are those who fight when fighting presses upon them and they find no alternative, and among people are those who fight out of zeal, and among people are those who fight seeking the face of God. Those are the martyrs. Indeed, every soul will be resurrected upon what it died. No soul knows about this man who was killed that he has—that his past and future sins have been forgiven."
