✧ The obligation of jihad

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْحَوَارِيُّ بْنُ زِيَادٍ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ فَجَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ شَابٌّ فَقَالَ: أَلَا تُجَاهِدُ ؟ فَسَكَتَ وَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: إِنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ بُنِيَ عَلَى أَرْبَعِ دَعَائِمَ، إِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، لَا يُفَرَّقُ بَيْنَهُمَا، وَصِيَامِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا، وَإِنَّ الْجِهَادَ وَالصَّدَقَةَ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ الْحَسَنِ
Translation
✧ I was sitting with ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar when a young man came to him and said: Will you not wage jihad? He remained silent and turned away from him. Then Ibn ʿUmar said: Islam is built on four pillars: establishing prayer and giving zakat, between which no separation is made, fasting the month of Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House for whoever is able to find a way there. And jihad and charity are among good deeds.
