Translation

✧ If you are going to do it, do not leave the people without a qiblah. Put poles at its corners and hang curtains over it so that the people pray towards it. He did so, until when it was Sunday, he ascended the minbar and said: O people, what do you think about demolishing the House? No one disagreed with him, and they said: We think you should not demolish it. He remained silent, until when their opinions were exhausted, he said: One of you keeps patching its foundation on his head, while you see the bird land on it and its stones scatter. Verily, I am demolishing it tomorrow. That coincided with the funeral of a man from Banu Bakr. Those who wished to follow it and those who did not wish to follow it followed it. A cushion was broken for him at the Maqam, then men climbed over it from behind the curtains, and the people finished their funeral. One went to Mina and another went to the well of Maymun, thinking only that a calamity from the sky would befall them. When the people were told: Enter, for by Allah it has been demolished, the people entered. He dug until he demolished it down to a foundation in the Hijr. There it was, parts holding onto each other, not stable. He called the elders of Quraysh and showed it to them. Ibn Muti' took the pickaxe from the side of the foundation facing the house of Banu Humayd and made it all collapse completely. Then he rebuilt it until he named it. He made for it two doors placed on the ground, eastern and western; people enter from this door and exit from this one. He built it. When he finished building it, there was in the mosque an unsightly pit, mounds, and sitting places. The people returned to its gravel, and a man would spread gravel with a hundred camels' load of it, until a man would go out in his cloak and shirt to Dhu Tuwa and come back with gravel in the edge of his robe, seeking reward for that. When the people grew weary, he took its mortar and spread gravel until it was level. Then he said: O people, I think you should perform 'umrah from al-Tan'im on foot. Whoever is wealthy should sacrifice a camel, otherwise a cow, otherwise a sheep. He said: I remembered the Day of Resurrection from the multitude of people. The earth crawled with them, its plains and mountains, old people and young people, virgins and married women, women, and shaving heads. He said: We came to the House and circumambulated with him, and ran between al-Safa and al-Marwah, then we slaughtered and sacrificed. I have never seen heads, hooves, and arms in one place more than on that day.
