✧ The Sunnah of Drinking from Zamzam and What to Say When Drinking It

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، وَلَا أَعْلَمُ الثَّوْرِيَّ إِلَّا قَدْ حَدَّثَنَاهُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ عِنْدَ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَجَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ، فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: مِنْ أَيْنَ جِئْتَ ؟ قَالَ: شَرِبْتُ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ، قَالَ: شَرِبْتَهَا كَمَا يَنْبَغِي ؟ قَالَ: وَكَيْفَ يَنْبَغِي يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ؟ قَالَ: تَسْتَقْبِلُ الْقِبْلَةَ، وَتُسَمِّي اللهَ ثُمَّ تَشْرَبُ، وَتَتَنَفَّسُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ حَمِدْتَ اللهَ تَعَالَى، وَتَتَضَلَّعُ مِنْهَا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ آيَةَ مَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَتَضَلَّعُونَ مِنْ زَمْزَمَ.
Translation
✧ I was with Ibn 'Abbas when a man came and sat beside him. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "Where have you come from?" He said, "I drank from Zamzam." He said, "Did you drink it as it should be drunk?" He said, "And how should it be drunk, O Ibn 'Abbas?" He said, "Face the qibla, mention the name of Allah, then drink, and breathe three times. When you finish, praise Allah Almighty, and drink your fill of it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'The sign between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink their fill of Zamzam.'"
