Translation

✧ I was far from water, became junub, and performed tayammum. Something arose in my heart, so I went to the house of Abū Dharr but did not find him. I went to the mosque, where his appearance had been described to me, and there he was standing praying; I recognized him by the description. I greeted him, but he did not respond until he finished. I said, “Are you Abū Dharr?” He said, “My family says that.” I said, “No one was more beloved to me to see than you.” He said, “Now you have seen me.” I said, “We stay far from water, become junub, and remain for days performing tayammum. Something in my heart troubled me about that.” He said, “Do you know Abū Dharr? I was in Madinah and disliked staying there, so the Messenger of God ﷺ ordered a small flock of sheep for me, and I went out with them. I became junub, performed tayammum with clean earth, and prayed for several days. Something in my heart troubled me until I thought I was doomed. So I ordered a young camel to be saddled and mounted it until I reached Madinah. I found the Messenger of God ﷺ in the shade of the mosque among a group of his companions. I greeted him, and he raised his head and said, ‘Glory be to God! Abū Dharr?’ I said, ‘Yes, O Messenger of God. I became junub and performed tayammum for several days; then something in my heart troubled me until I thought I was doomed.’ The Messenger of God ﷺ called for water, and a black slave woman brought it in a bowl that was shaking—meaning not full. He said, ‘Clean earth is sufficient as long as you do not find water, even for ten years. But when you find water, let it touch your skin.’ ” He said, “Abū Dharr’s janāba was from sexual intercourse.”
