✧ The Construction of the Ka'bah

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنِ الْمِنْهَالِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ:
سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُ عَلَى الْمَاءِ ﴾قُلْتُ: " عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ الْمَاءُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُخْلَقَ شَيْءٌ ؟ قَالَ: عَلَى مَتْنِ الرِّيحِ "، قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ: قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ: فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: فَكَانَ يَصْعَدُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ بُخَارٌ كَبُخَارِ الْأَنْهَارِ، فَاسْتَصْبَرَ، فَعَادَ صَبِيرًا، فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ: ﴿ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٌ ﴾
Translation
✧ I asked Ibn Abbas about His saying: ﴿And His Throne was upon the water﴾. I said: "Upon what was the water before anything was created?" He said: "Upon the back of the wind." Ibn Jurayj said: Sa'id b. Jubayr said: Ibn Abbas said: "Vapor like the vapor of rivers used to rise to the sky, then it became solid and returned as a mass. That is His saying: ﴿Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke﴾."
