✧ The Gift for the House

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ قَالَ:
بُعِثَ مَعِي بِخَوَاتِيمَ مِنَ الْبَصْرَةِ لِلْبَيْتِ، فَضَاعَتْ، فَسَأَلْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ: هَلْ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ ؟ فَقَالَ: " لَا "، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " وَمَا يَصْنَعُونَ بِالْهَدِيَّةِ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ ؟ لَأَنْ أَتَصَدَّقَ بِدِرْهَمٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أُهْدِيَ إِلَى هَذَا الْبَيْتِ مِائَةَ أَلْفٍ، وَلَوْ سَالَ عَلَيَّ هَذَا الْوَادِي مَالًا مَا أَهْدَيْتُ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا
Translation
✧ Seals from al-Baṣrah for the House were sent with me, and they were lost. I asked al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad: “Is there anything due in them?” He said: “No.” Then he said: “What do they do with a gift to the House? To give a dirham in charity is dearer to me than to gift to this House a hundred thousand. If this valley flowed with wealth for me, I would not gift any of it to the House.”
