Translation
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out, three hundred riders, with our commander Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, to watch for the caravan of Quraysh. He said: We set out and stayed on the coast. Severe hunger struck us until we ate leaves. He said: Then the sea cast out for us a creature called al-anbar (sperm whale), and we ate from it for half a month and anointed ourselves with its fat until our bodies recovered. He said: Abu Ubaydah took a rib from it and looked for the tallest camel in the army and the tallest man among them, then loaded him on the camel. Then he passed beneath the rib. He said: A man of the people had slaughtered three fat camels, then slaughtered three fat camels, then slaughtered three more. Then Abu Ubaydah forbade him. Amr said: I heard Abu Salih say: Qays b. Sa'd said to his father: I was in the army and they became hungry. He said: Slaughter. He said: I have slaughtered. He said: Then they became hungry. He said: Slaughter. He said: I have slaughtered. He said: Then they became hungry. He said: Slaughter. He said: I have slaughtered. Then they became hungry. He said: Slaughter. He said: I have been forbidden. So I think he had slaughtered the fat camels on that day.
