Translation

✧ ʿAṭāʾ differentiated for me between the spiritual retreat of the villager and the bedouin. He said: "As for the villager, when he vows the retreat, he abandons his house, abandons the wife, and fasts. The bedouin is not from the people of Makkah, so when he vows the retreat, all of Makkah becomes for him... He may retreat in whichever part of Makkah he wishes, and in whichever of its houses he wishes, and he does not fast, and he may have intercourse with women if he wishes, and he may sell and buy, and attend gatherings, and enter houses, and visit the sick, and follow the funeral procession, unless he intends within himself that his retreat should be at the door of the mosque and that he abstain from what is forbidden during retreat. And he made the people of ʿArafah from the people of Makkah." And he recited that for someone whose family are not present at the Sacred Mosque. He said: "And we have heard that said." I said: May he go out to his family for a need in an matter that has become urgent for him? He said: "No." I said: Then why does he perform Hajj and why does he perform ʿUmrah and why do they differ? He said: "Hajj and ʿUmrah are better than what he is in."
