عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ قَالَ:
بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا؛ فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهِمْ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ! ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي الشَّهَادَةَ، قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ، وَغَنِّمْهُمْ، قَالَ: فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا، قَالَ: ثُمَّ بَعَثَ جَيْشًا فَخَرَجْتُ فِيهِمْ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ! ادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي الشَّهَادَةَ، فَقَالَ: " اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ، ثُمَّ الثَّالِثَةُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ " فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَتَيْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَنْ تَدْعُوَ لِي بِالشَّهَادَةِ، فَقُلْتَ: " اللَّهُمَّ سَلِّمْهُمْ وَغَنِّمْهُمْ " فَسَلِمْنَا وَغَنِمْنَا، يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ! فَأْمُرْنِي بِعَمَلٍ، قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّوْمِ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا مِثْلَ لَهُ، وَلَا عِدْلَ "، قَالَ أَبُو أُمَامَةَ: " فَرَزَقَ اللهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ خَيْرًا
Translation
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ dispatched a military expedition, and I went out with them. I said, “O Messenger of God, supplicate God to grant me martyrdom.” He said, “O God, keep them safe and grant them spoils.” He [Abu Umamah] said: So we were kept safe and gained spoils. He said: Then he dispatched an army, and I went out with them. I said, “O Messenger of God, supplicate God to grant me martyrdom.” He said, “O God, keep them safe and grant them spoils.” Then the third time was the same. I said, “O Messenger of God, I came to you three times asking you to supplicate for martyrdom for me, and you said, ‘O God, keep them safe and grant them spoils,’ and we were kept safe and gained spoils. O Messenger of God, so command me to an action.” He said, “You must fast, for there is nothing like it and no equal.” Abu Umamah said: “So God granted good from that.”
