Translation

✧ I went out to al-Rabadha seeking Abū Dharr, but I did not find him. I greeted his wife and said: 'Where is Abū Dharr?' She said: 'He has gone to work.' He said: 'I sat down, and then Abū Dharr came leading two camels, one tied to the tail of the other, and on the neck of each was a water skin. He made the camels kneel and carried the water skins. I greeted him, and he spoke to his wife about something, and it seemed she replied sharply. He repeated and she repeated, so he said: 'You do no more than what the Messenger of God ﷺ said: A woman is like a rib; if you straighten her, she breaks, yet in her there is benefit and curvature.' Then he brought a bowl containing something like a small bird and said: 'Eat, for I am fasting.' Then he stood to pray, then returned and ate with him. Nuʿaym said: 'Indeed we belong to God, O Abū Dharr! Whoever among people lies to me—but you, I did not think you would lie to me.' He said: 'I did not lie to you. I said I was fasting, then I ate. Now I tell you: I am fasting. I fasted three days of this month, so its fasting became due for me and its breaking became lawful for me.'
