✧ Breaking a voluntary fast and fasting it if one did not intend it at night

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ،

أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ يَوْمًا: مَا تَرَوْنَ عَلَيَّ؛ فَإِنِّي أَصْبَحْتُ الْيَوْمَ صَائِمًا، فَرَأَيْتُ جَارِيَةً لِي فَوَقَعْتُ عَلَيْهَا؟، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: " صُمْتَ تَطَوُّعًا، فَأَتَيْتَ حَلَالًا لَا أَرَى عَلَيْكَ شَيْئًا

Translation

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab said to his companions one day: What do you think I owe? I began this day fasting, then I saw a slave girl of mine and had intercourse with her. Ali said: You fasted voluntarily, and you came to something lawful. I do not think you owe anything.
