Translation
✧ When Umar b. al-Khattab entered the first night of Ramadan, he would pray the maghrib prayer, then say, 'Sit down.' Then he would deliver a brief sermon, saying, 'To proceed: this month its fasting has been prescribed upon you, but its standing in prayer has not been prescribed upon you. Whoever among you is able to stand, let him stand, for these are the supererogatory acts of good which Allah has mentioned. Whoever is not able, let him sleep on his bed. Let each of you beware of saying: I will fast if so-and-so fasts, and I will stand if so-and-so stands. Whoever among you fasts or stands, let him do that for Allah. Let each of you know that he is in prayer as long as he is waiting for a prayer. Reduce idle talk in the houses of Allah,' twice or three times. Then he would say, 'Beware, none of you should anticipate the month,' three times. 'Beware, do not fast until you see it' — or 'do not fast until they see it' — 'unless it is obscured for you. If it is obscured for you, then count to thirty. Then do not break your fast until you see the night grow dark over the mountain passes.'
