✧ Wiping over the leather socks

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ:
أَنْكَرْتُ عَلَى سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ بِالْكُوفَةِ الْمَسْحَ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ فَقَالَ: وَعَلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ بَأْسٌ ؟ وَهُوَ مُقِيمٌ بِالْكُوفَةِ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: لَمَّا قَالَ ذَلِكَ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا لَا أَعْلَمُ، فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْهِ شَيْئًا، ثُمَّ الْتَقَيْنَا عِنْدَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ: اسْتَفْتِ أَبَاكَ فِيمَا أَنْكَرْتَ عَلَيَّ فِي شَأْنِ الْخُفَّيْنِ، فَقُلْتُ: أَرَأَيْتَ أَحَدَنَا إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ وَفِي رِجْلَيْهِ الْخُفَّانِ عَلَيْهِ فِي ذَلِكَ بَأْسٌ أَنْ يَمْسَحَ عَلَيْهِمَا ؟
Translation
✧ I disapproved of Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas, while he was governor in Kufa, wiping over the leather socks. He said: Is there any harm on me in that? — while he was residing in Kufa. 'Abd Allah said: When he said that, I knew that he knows something about that which I do not know, so I did not answer him back. Then we met with 'Umar, and Sa'd said: Ask your father for a ruling about what you disapproved of regarding the matter of the leather socks. I said: Have you considered if one of us performs ablution while wearing leather socks on his feet — is there any harm on him in wiping over them?}
