✧ What the Sky Waters

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ:
طَعَامٌ مِنْ أَرْزَاقِ هَذِهِ السُّفُنِ، أَوْ أَعْطَانِيهِ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ قَمْحٍ أَوْ تَمْرٍ فَأَمْسَكْتُهُ أُرِيدُ أَكْلَهُ، فَيَحُولُ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ، أَوْ عَلَى مَا يَبْقَى مِنْهُ؟ قَالَ: " لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ فِيهِ صَدَقَةٌ، لَعَمْرِي إِنَّا لَنَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ لِنَبْتَاعَ الطَّعَامَ فَمَا نُزَكِّيهِ قَالَ: وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ بَيْعَهُ إِذَا بِعْتَهُ فَزَكِّهِ
Translation
✧ Food from the provisions of these ships, or the Commander of the Faithful gave it to me from wheat or dates, and I kept it intending to eat it; then a year passes on it, or on what remains of it? He said: “You owe no zakāh on it. By my life, we do that to buy food and we do not pay zakāh on it.” He said: “But if you intend to sell it, when you sell it, pay zakāh on it.”
