✧ No Zakat Except on Cash

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ
فِي رَجُلٍ غَلَبَهُ الْعَدُوُّ عَلَى أَلْفِ دِرْهَمٍ، فَاسْتَخَرْجَهَا بَعْدَ سَنَةٍ، قَالَ: " لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ زَكَاةٌ حَتَّى يَحُولَ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْلُ مِنْ يَوْمِ أَخَذَهُ، لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ مُسْتَهْلَكًا، لَوْ غَلَبَ عَلَيْهِ الْمُسْلِمُونَ اقْتَسَمُوهُ
Translation
✧ Regarding a man from whom the enemy seized a thousand dirhams, and he recovered them after a year, he said: “He owes no zakat on it until a full year passes from the day he took it, because it was considered lost. Had the Muslims seized it, they would have divided it.”
