Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ appointed Ibn al-Utbiyya, a man from the Azd, as a collector. When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he settled accounts with him, he said: 'This is for you, and this was given to me as a gift.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Why did you not sit in the house of your mother and father so that your gift would come to you, if you are truthful?' Then the Prophet ﷺ stood and addressed us, praising Allah, then said: 'I appoint one of you over work from what Allah has entrusted to me, and one of you comes and says: This is for you, and this is a gift given to me. Why did he not sit in the house of his father and mother to see whether anything would be gifted to him or not? By the One in whose hand is my soul, none of you takes anything without his right except that he meets Allah carrying it on the Day of Resurrection. I shall not recognize any of you who meets Allah carrying a camel that bellows, a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats.' Then he raised his hands until I could see the whiteness of his armpits, then said: 'Have I conveyed?'—with the sight of my own eyes and the hearing of my own ears, from Abū Ḥumayd.
