عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ هَمَّامٍ، عَنْ مِينَاءَ،
أَنَّهُمْ جَاءُوا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فِي زَمَنِ عُثْمَانَ فَقَالُوا: أَعْطِنَا أُعْطِيَاتِنَا، فَقَالَ: مَا عِنْدِي لَكُمْ عَطَاءٌ، إِنَّمَا عَطَاؤُكُمْ مِنْ فَيْئِكُمْ وَجِزْيَتِكُمْ، وَالصَّدَقَةُ لِأَهْلِهَا، قَالَ: فَلَمَّا تَرَدَّدُوا إِلَيْهِ جَاءَ بِالْمَفَاتِيحِ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَرَمَى بِهَا، وَقَالَ: " إِنِّي لَسْتُ بِخَازِنٍ
Translation
✧ They came to Ibn Masʿūd in the time of ʿUthmān and said: 'Give us our stipends.' He said: 'I have no stipend for you. Your stipend is from your war booty and your poll tax, while charity belongs to its rightful recipients.' When they kept coming back to him, he brought the keys to ʿUthmān, threw them down, and said: 'I am not a treasurer.'
