عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَطِيَّةَ الْوَادِعِيِّ قَالَ:
دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَمَسْرُوقٌ، عَلَى عَائِشَةَ، فَقُلْنَا: إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللهِ أَحَبَّ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ، وَمَنْ كَرِهَ لِقَاءَ اللهِ كَرِهَ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ، وَالْمَوْتُ قَبْلَ لِقَاءِ اللهِ، فَقَالَتْ: يَرْحَمُ اللهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدَّثَكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ لَمْ تَسْأَلُوهُ عَنْ آخِرِهِ وَسَأُحَدِّثُكُمْ عَنْ ذَلِكَ: إِنَّ اللهَ إِذَا أَرَادَ بِعَبْدِهِ خَيْرًا قَيَّضَ لَهُ مَلَكًا قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ فَسَدَّدَهُ وَيَسَّرَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ، وَهُوَ خَيْرُ مَا كَانَ، فَإِذَا حَضَرَ فَرَأَى ثَوَابَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَجَعَلَ يَتَهَوَّعُ نَفْسَهُ، وَدَّ أَنَّهَا خَرَجَتْ، فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ أَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللهِ فَأَحَبَّ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ، وَإِذَا أَرَادَ بِعَبْدٍ سُوءًا قَيَّضَ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِعَامٍ فَصَدَّهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ وَفَتَنَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ شَرَّ مَا كَانَ، وَيَقُولُ النَّاسُ: مَاتَ فُلَانٌ وَهُوَ شَرُّ مَا كَانَ، فَإِذَا حَضَرَ فَرَأَى ثَوَابَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ جَعَلَ يَتَبَلَّعُ نَفْسَهُ وَدَّ أَنَّهُ لَا يَخْرُجُ، فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ كَرِهَ لِقَاءَ اللهِ وَكَرِهَ اللهُ لِقَاءَهُ "
Translation
✧ Masruq and I entered upon 'A'ishah and said: 'Ibn Mas'ud said: Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever hates to meet Allah, Allah hates to meet him—and death is before meeting Allah.' She said: 'May Allah have mercy on Abu 'Abd al-Rahman. He told you a hadith but you did not ask him about its end. I will tell you about that: When Allah intends good for His servant, He appoints an angel for him a year before his death, who guides him and makes things easy for him until he dies in the best state possible. When death approaches and he sees his reward from Paradise, he begins to gasp for his soul, wishing it would come out. Then he loves to meet Allah, and Allah loves to meet him. And when Allah intends evil for a servant, He appoints a devil for him a year before his death, who turns him away, leads him astray, and tempts him until he dies in the worst state possible. People say: So-and-so died in the worst state. When death approaches and he sees his punishment from the Fire, he begins to swallow his soul, wishing it would not come out. Then he hates to meet Allah, and Allah hates to meet him.'
