Translation
✧ When the deceased is placed in his grave, prayer is at his head, zakah at his right, fasting at his left, and charity, maintaining ties, kindness, and benevolence to people are at his feet. He is approached from the direction of his head, and prayer says: “There is no entrance before me.” Then he is approached from his right, and zakah says: “There is no entrance before me.” Then he is approached from his left, and fasting says: “There is no entrance before me.” Then he is approached from his feet, and charity says: “There is no entrance before me.” He said: Then he is made to sit up. Abu Hurayrah said: He hears the striking of their sandals. He said: He is made to sit, and the sun is shown to him as if it has neared setting. He says: “Let me pray.” It is said to him: “You will do so.” Then it is said to him: “What do you say about this man?” He says: “Muhammad?” They say: “Yes.” He says: “I bear witness that he came with the truth from Allah.” He said: It is said to him: “Upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you will be raised, if Allah wills.” He said: That is His saying: “Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.” He said: A door to the Fire is opened for him, and he looks at his dwellings in it. It is said to him: “If you had disobeyed, these would be your dwellings,” and he increases in joy and happiness, and his grave is made spacious for him—seventy. Abd al-Rahman b. Yahya b. Hantab said: Then it is said: “Sleep the sleep of a bride whom no one awakens except the dearest of creation to him.” The hadith returns to Abu Hurayrah, who said: His soul is placed in the good breeze in the bodies of birds that hang among the trees of Paradise, or hang from the trees of Paradise. He said: And the bodies return to that for which they were created. He said: As for the disbeliever, he is approached from the direction of his head and nothing is found for him. He is made to sit, then it is said to him: “What did you use to say about this man?”—twice. He does not remember until he is prompted, and he says: “Muhammad? I used to say what the people say.” It is said to him: “You have spoken truthfully; upon that you lived, upon that you died, and upon that you will be raised, if Allah wills.” Then a door to Paradise is opened, and he sees its dwellings. It is said to him: “If you had acted and obeyed Allah, these would be your dwellings,” and he increases in regret and destruction. He said: Then it is closed upon him, and a door to the Fire is opened, and he sees his dwellings in it and what Allah has prepared for him of punishment, and he increases in regret and destruction. His grave is constricted for him until his ribs interlace. That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “a life of narrowness.” He said: And his soul is placed in Sijjin.
