✧ Patience, weeping, and wailing

قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ: وَأَخْبَرَنِيهِ سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ قَالَ:
دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ مُعْتَمِدٌ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ ابْنُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَجُودُ بِنَفْسِهِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ دَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ، تَبْكِي ؟ مَتَى يَرَاكَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ تَبْكِي يَبْكُوا قَالَ: فَلَمَّا تَرَقْرَقَتْ عَبْرَتُهُ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا هَذَا رَحِمٌ، وَإِنَّ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُ لَا يُرْحَمُ، إِنَّمَا أَنْهَى النَّاسَ عَنِ النِّيَاحَةِ، وَأَنْ يُنْدَبَ الْمَيِّتُ بِمَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى قَالَ: " لَوْلَا أَنَّهُ وَعْدٌ جَامِعٌ وَسَبِيلٌ مَأْتِيٌّ، وَأَنَّ الْآخِرَ مِنَّا يَلْحَقُ بِالْأَوَّلِ، لَوَجَدْنَا غَيْرَ الَّذِي وَجَدْنَا، وَإِنَّا بِكَ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ لَمَحْزُونُونَ، تَدْمَعُ الْعَيْنُ، وَيَجِدُ الْقَلْبُ، وَلَا نَقُولُ مَا يُسْخِطُ الرَّبَّ، وَفَضْلُ رَضَاعِهِ فِي الْجَنَّةِ
Translation
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ entered, leaning on 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, while Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet ﷺ, was breathing his last. When he saw him, his eyes shed tears. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf said to him, 'O Messenger of God, do you weep? Whenever the Muslims see you weeping, they will weep.' He said: When his tears flowed, he said, 'This is only compassion, and whoever does not show compassion will not be shown compassion. I only forbid people from wailing and from lamenting the dead with what is not in him.' When he passed away, he said, 'Were it not that it is a comprehensive promise and a path that is trodden, and that the last of us will join the first, we would have found grief other than what we have found. We are surely saddened by you, O Ibrahim. The eye sheds tears, and the heart grieves, but we do not say what displeases the Lord. And the excellence of his suckling is in Paradise.'
