✧ Walking with the funeral

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ قَالَ:
شَهِدْتُ جِنَازَةً مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، فَجَلَسَ فِي الْمَقْبَرَةِ، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْجِنَازَةِ مُقْبِلًا وَهُمْ بُطَاءٌ، فَقَالَ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ لِمَا أَحْدَثَ النَّاسُ فِي الْجَنَائِزِ، لَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَسْمَعُ الرَّجُلَ يُذَكِّرُ الرَّجُلَ وَيُخَوِّفُهُ فَيَقُولُ: اتَّقِ اللهَ، لَيُوشِكَنَّ أَنْ يُجْمَزَ بِكَ، لَا وَاللهِ مَا كَانَ الْمَشْيُ بِالْجَنَائِزِ إِلَّا جَمْزًا
Translation
✧ I witnessed a funeral with ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar. He sat in the graveyard, then began looking at the funeral approaching while they were slow. He said: 'Glory be to Allah! What the people have introduced into funerals! I used to hear a man reminding another man and frightening him, saying: Fear Allah; you will soon be carried swiftly. No, by Allah, walking with funeral biers was only swift.'
