✧ The bier and seeking forgiveness

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: أَتُكْرَهُ الْقَطِيفَةُ الصَّفْرَاءُ لِلنَّعْشِ ؟ قَالَ: لَمْ أَعْلَمْ، قَالَ: فَالْحَمْرَاءُ ؟ قَالَ، قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ: نَهَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ، يَعْنِي ثِيَابًا مِنَ الْحَرِيرِ، وَقَطِيفَةِ الْأُرْجُوَانِ، وَالْمِيثَرَةِ، هَيْئَةٌ كَانَتْ تُجْعَلُ تَحْتَ الرَّجُلِ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الطِّنْفِسَةِ كَهَيْئَةِ الْبَرْذَعَةِ اللَّطِيفَةِ ذَاتِ ذَبَاذِبَ حُمْرٍ وَصُفْرٍ

Translation

✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: Is the yellow velvet disliked for the bier? He said: I do not know. He said: What about the red one? He said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said: The Prophet ﷺ forbade me from wearing a gold ring, from wearing qassī (meaning silk garments), from using a purple velvet, and from using a mīthara—a thing that used to be placed under a man like a small carpet, resembling a fine padded saddle with red and yellow fringes.
