✧ The shroud

قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، وَأَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ:
حَضَرْتُ جِنَازَةَ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ، وَحَضَرَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ وَلَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ كَانَ وَالِيًا لِبَنِي الْعَبَّاسِ، وَلَمْ يُرَ مِثْلُهُ قَطُّ، فَصَلَّى وَكَانَ عَلَى النَّعْشِ ثَوْبٌ فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَضَعُوهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ لِيُكَفَّنَ فِيهِ فَجَذَبَهُ، وَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا كَفَنُهُ مَا أُخْرِجَ بِهِ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ: " فَلَمْ يَتْرُكْهُمْ يُكَفِّنُونَهُ فِيهِ
Translation
✧ I attended the funeral of Hammam b. Munabbih, and Umar b. Abd al-Hamid, a man from the descendants of Umar b. al-Khattab, attended it. He was the first governor of the Abbasids, and nothing like him had ever been seen. He prayed, and there was a cloth over the bier. They wanted to place it in his grave to shroud him in it, but he pulled it away and said: His shroud is only what he was brought out from his house wearing. He said: "So he did not let them shroud him in it."
