Translation
✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: “Is the prayer on the day of Fiṭr obligatory upon all people?” He said: “No, except in congregation.” He said: “Is Jumuʿah not more obligatory in that it is attended than it? Only in congregation. So how about Fiṭr?” ʿAṭāʾ said: “They are not completed as four [rakʿahs] in congregation or otherwise.” He said: I said to ʿAṭāʾ: “Is it a right upon the people of a village to attend the ṣalāt al-Fiṭr just as it is a right upon them to attend the day of Jumuʿah?” He said: “Yes.” He said this repeatedly, and he had told me another time before this: “That is a right. But as for like the right of Jumuʿah, no. They were commanded to Jumuʿah.” Then he said: “There is no day greater than the day of Jumuʿah. It is the greatest of all days, greater than the day of ʿArafah and the day of Fiṭr. It has reached us that there is nothing—land or sea, tree or stone—but it ceases not to supplicate on that day until the sun rises, except for the two heavy ones: jinn and humans.”
