✧ Delivering the Sermon While Standing

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ سَمَّاهُ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ:
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُومُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ إِلَى جِذْعِ نَخْلَةٍ مَنْصُوبٍ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَيَخْطُبُ، حَتَّى بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ الْمِنْبَرَ، فَاسْتَشَارَ ذَوِي الرَّأْيِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَرَأَوْا أَنْ يَتَّخِذَهُ، فَاتَّخَذَ مِنْبَرًا، فَلَمَّا جَاءَتِ الْجُمُعَةُ، أَقْبَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَمْشِي حَتَّى جَلَسَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، فَلَمَّا فَقَدَهُ الْجِذْعُ حَنَّ حَنِينًا أَفْزَعَ النَّاسَ، فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ، حَتَّى جَاءَهُ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ فَمَسَحَهُ فَهَدَأَ فَلَمْ يُسْمَعْ مِنْهُ حَنِينٌ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ
Translation
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand on Fridays by a trunk of a palm tree that had been erected in the mosque and deliver the sermon, until he decided to have a pulpit made. He consulted the people of sound judgment among the Muslims, and they advised him to make one. So he had a pulpit made. When Friday came, the Prophet ﷺ walked over and sat on the pulpit. When the trunk missed him, it moaned with a sound that alarmed the people. The Prophet ﷺ rose from his seat, came to it, stood by it, and stroked it, and it became calm. No moaning was heard from it after that.
