Translation

✧ Yaḥyā b. Zakarīyā was sent and commanded to tell his people five words and to strike parables for them. They pleased him, so he kept them to himself. It was said to ʿĪsā: “Go to Yaḥyā and command him to convey the words he was commanded with, otherwise you convey them.” When he came to him, he said: “I will convey them.” So he said to his people: The parable of associating partners with Allah is like a man who bought a slave with his own wealth, treated him well, and freed him, then said: “Go.” So he went and acquired good things, and he gave his good things and his gain to a man other than the one who freed him. That is the parable of associating partners with Allah. The parable of prayer is like a man who came to an awesome ruler, not hoping that he would permit him to speak, but he came to him and permitted him to say whatever he wished. That is the parable of the one praying: when he is in prayer, Allah grants him from his supplication what he loves. The parable of zakāh is like a man captured by the enemy. They said: “Kill him; what are you waiting for?” He said: “What will you gain by killing me? Instead, assign me installments, and I will pay you the price of my freedom.” So they assigned him installments. Each time he paid an installment, a part of his slavery was released until he was freed. Thus charity expiates sins. The parable of fasting is like a man who witnessed battle and took up weapons until he saw that nothing could reach him. That is the parable of fasting: fasting is a shield from the Fire. The parable of the Qurʾān is like a people in a fortified stronghold: the enemy does not come to them except that he finds them alert. Thus is the parable of the companion of the Qurʾān against Satan.
