✧ When Are the Two Rak'ahs of Fajr Performed

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ:

هُمَا الْفَجْرَانِ، فَأَمَّا الْفَجْرُ الَّذِي يَسْطَعُ فِي السَّمَاءِ فَلَيْسَ بِشَيْءٍ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُ شَيْئًا، وَلَكِنَّ الْفَجْرَ الَّذِي يَنْتَشِرُ عَلَى رُءُوسِ الْجِبَالِ فَهُوَ الَّذِي يُحَرِّمُ "، فَقَالَ عَطَاءٌ: فَأَمَّا إِذَا سَطَعَ سُطُوعًا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَسُطُوعُهُ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ فِي السَّمَاءِ طُولًا، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُحَرَّمُ لَهُ فِي الشَّرَابِ لِصِيَامٍ وَلَا صَلَاةٍ، وَلَا يَفُوتُ لَهُ حَجٌّ، وَلَكِنْ إِذَا انْتَشَرَ عَلَى رُءُوسِ الْجِبَالِ حَرُمَ الشَّرَابُ عَلَى الصَّوْمِ وَفَاتَ لَهُ الْحَجُّ. وَقَالَ عُمَرُ: الْفَجْرُ الَّذِي كَأَنَّهُ ذَهَبُ السِّرْحَانِ يَقُولُ: " ذَلِكَ السَّاطِعُ فِي السَّمَاءِ "

Translation

✧ They are the two dawns. As for the dawn that spreads vertically in the sky, it is nothing, and it does not make anything forbidden. Rather, the dawn that spreads over the mountain tops is the one that makes things forbidden. 'Ata' said: As for when it extends vertically into the sky—its vertical extension being that it goes upward in the sky—then no drink is forbidden for fasting, no prayer is affected, and no Hajj is missed. But when it spreads over the mountain tops, drinking is forbidden for the fast and the Hajj is missed. 'Umar said: The dawn that is like the tail of the wolf—meaning that vertical one in the sky.
