Translation
✧ The character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the Qur'an. He said: I was about to get up, but then I changed my mind and said to her: Tell me about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said: Do you not recite this surah, 'O you wrapped in garments'? He said: I said, 'Yes.' She said: Allah made night prayer obligatory at the beginning of this surah. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ and his companions stood in prayer for a year until their feet became swollen. Allah withheld the conclusion of it for twelve months. Then Allah sent down the alleviation at the end of the surah, and night prayer became voluntary after having been obligatory. I was about to get up, but then I changed my mind and asked her: I said, 'O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: We used to prepare for him his siwak and his water for purification at night. Allah would awaken him whenever He willed. Then he would use the siwak and perform ablution, then pray nine rak'ahs, not sitting in them except at the eighth. He would praise Allah, remember Him, and supplicate to Him. Then he would stand and not give the salam until he prayed the ninth. Then he would sit and praise Allah, remember Him, and supplicate to Him, then give a salam loud enough for us to hear. Then he would pray two rak'ahs while sitting, after giving the salam. That is eleven rak'ahs, my dear son. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grew older and gained weight, he performed witr with seven, praying two rak'ahs while sitting after giving the salam. That is nine, my dear son. Whenever the Prophet of Allah ﷺ prayed a prayer, he loved to persist in it. And whenever sleep or pain overcame him and prevented him from praying at night, he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day. I do not know that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ ever recited the entire Qur'an in a single night, nor prayed the whole night until morning, nor fasted an entire month other than Ramadan. He said: I went to Ibn 'Abbas and told him her hadith. He said: She has spoken the truth. If I were able to visit her, I would have spoken to her face to face. Hakim b. Aflah said: If I had known that you would not visit her, I would not have told you her hadith.
