✧ How Many Rak'ahs Is the Witr

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ خُصَيْفَةَ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ،
أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عُثْمَانَ التَّيْمِيَّ عَنْ صَلَاةِ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: إِنْ شِئْتَ أَخْبَرْتُكَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: " لَأَغْلِبَنَّ اللَّيْلَةَ النَّفَرَ عَلَى الْحِجْرِ يُرِيدُ الْمَقَامَ قَالَ: " فَلَمَّا قُمْتُ إِذَا رَجُلٌ يَزْحَمُنِي مُتَقَنِّعًا " قَالَ: فَنَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا هُوَ عُثْمَانُ فَتَأَخَّرْتُ عَنْهُ، فَصَلَّى، فَإِذَا هُوَ يَسْجُدُ سُجُودَ الْقُرْآنِ، حَتَّى إِذَا قُلْتُ: " هَذَا هُوَ أَذَانُ الْفَجْرِ، أَوْتَرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ لَمْ يُصَلِّ غَيْرَهَا ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَ
Translation
✧ A man asked 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Uthman al-Taymi about the prayer of Talhah b. 'Ubayd Allah. He said, "If you wish, I will tell you about the prayer of 'Uthman b. 'Affan." He said, "Yes." He said: I said, "Tonight I will certainly prevail over the group at the Hijr"—meaning the Maqam. He said: "When I got up, there was a man pressing against me, veiled." He said: I looked and it was 'Uthman, so I moved back from him. He prayed, and he was prostrating the prostrations of the Qur'an until I said, "This is the call to dawn." Then he performed witr with one rak'ah and did not pray anything else besides it, then he left.
