✧ How Many Rak'ahs Is the Witr

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ:
قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ لِسَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ: تُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ ؟ قَالَ: أَوَلَيْسَ إِنَّمَا الْوِتْرُ وَاحِدَةٌ ؟ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: " بَلَى، وَلَكِنْ ثَلَاثٌ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ: فَإِنِّي لَا أَزِيدُ عَلَيْهَا قَالَ: فَغَضِبَ عَبْدُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ: " أَتَغْضَبُ عَلَى أَنْ أُوتِرَ بِرَكْعَةٍ وَأَنْتَ تُوَرِّثُ ثَلَاثَ جَدَّاتٍ، أَفَلَا تُوَرِّثُ حَوَّاءَ امْرَأَةَ آدَمَ ؟
Translation
✧ 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud said to Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas: "Do you perform witr with one?" He replied, "Is not the witr only one?" So 'Abd Allah said, "Yes, but three is better." He said, "I will not add to it." He said, "'Abd Allah became angry, so Sa'd said, "Do you get angry at me for performing witr with one rak'ah while you make three grandmothers inherit? Why do you not make Hawwa', the wife of Adam, inherit?"
