عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: قَوْلُهُمْ لَا تَقْصُرُوا الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ قَالَ: " إِنِّي لَأَحْسَبُ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ كَذَلِكَ "، قُلْتُ: لِمَ ؟ قَالَ: " مِنْ أَجْلِ أَنَّ إِمَامَ الْمُتَّقِينَ لَمْ يَقْصُرِ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا فِي سَبِيلٍ مِنْ سُبُلِ اللهِ؛ حَجٍّ أَوْ عُمْرَةٍ أَوْ غَزْوَةٍ. وَالْأَئِمَّةُ بَعْدَهُ أَيُّهُمْ كَانَ يَضْرِبُ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغِي الدُّنْيَا ؟ قُلْتُ: أَرَأَيْتَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ خَرَجَ فِي غَيْرِ حَجٍّ وَلَا عُمْرَةٍ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، إِلَّا مَخْرَجُهُ إِلَى الطَّائِفِ "، قُلْتُ: فَجَابِرٌ، وَابْنُ عُمَرَ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ ؟ قَالَ: " وَلَا أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ "، قُلْتُ: فَمَا تَرَى ؟ قَالَ: قَالَ: " أَرَى أَلَّا تَقْصُرَ إِلَّا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فِي سَبِيلِ الْخَيْرِ، وَقَدْ كَانَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ لَا يَقُولُ هَذَا الْقَوْلَ، يَقْصُرُ فِي كُلِّ ذَلِكَ
Translation
✧ I said to 'Ata': Their saying, 'Do not shorten the prayer except in the path of Allah.' He said: 'I indeed think that is the case.' I said: 'Why?' He said: 'Because the Leader of the God-fearing did not shorten the prayer except on a path among the paths of Allah—Hajj, or 'Umrah, or a military expedition. And the leaders after him, which of them used to travel the earth seeking worldly gain?' I said: 'Do you think Ibn 'Abbas went out for other than Hajj or 'Umrah?' He said: 'No, except his going out to al-Ta'if.' I said: 'What about Jabir, Ibn 'Umar, and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri?' He said: 'Not one of them.' I said: 'So what is your view?' He said: 'I hold that one should not shorten except in the path of Allah, in the path of good. And before that he used not to say this; he used to shorten in all of that.'
