machine translationʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said:
✧ I said to 'Ata': 'A group of people gathered on a journey—a Qurayshi, an Arab, a client, a slave, and a bedouin from the desert. Which of them should lead his companions?' He said, 'The most learned in fiqh among them should lead them. If they are equal in fiqh, then the one who recites the Qur'an best. If they are equal in fiqh and recitation, then the eldest among them.' I said, 'If they are equal in fiqh and recitation, and the slave is the eldest among them, should he lead them because of his age, leading the Qurayshi and others?' He said, 'Yes. And why should not the most knowledgeable among them, the best reciter, and the eldest lead them, whoever he may be?'
