عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: كَيْفَ بَلَغَكَ كَانَ بَدْءُ السَّلَامِ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا أَدْرِي غَيْرَ أَنَّ أَوَّلَ مَنْ رَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ بِالتَّسْلِيمِ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ " قَالَ: " كَانُوا يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا يَرْفَعُونَ بِالتَّسْلِيمِ أَصْوَاتَهُمْ " قُلْتُ: فَيَنْصَرِفُونَ عَلَى تَسْلِيمِ التَّشَهُّدِ قَالَ: " لَا، وَلَكِنْ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ: السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ، ثُمَّ يَقُومُونَ حَتَّى رَفَعَ عُمَرُ صَوْتَهُ
Translation

machine translationʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said:
✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: How has it reached you concerning the beginning of the taslim? He said: "I do not know, except that the first to raise his voice with the taslim was ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ." He said: "They used to greet themselves without raising their voices with the taslim." I said: "So they would depart upon the greeting of the tashahhud?" He said: "No, but they would say within themselves: 'Peace be upon you,' then stand until ʿUmar raised his voice."
