✧ Dung Beetle and the Like

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: الْجُعَلُ يَمُوتُ فِي الْعَسَلِ، أَوِ السَّمْنِ، أَوِ الْوَدَكِ، أَوِ الْمَاءِ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا هُوَ فُوفَةٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ لَحْمٌ وَلَا دَمٌ، إِنْ وَقَعَ فِي جَامِدٍ أَوْ غَيْرِ جَامِدٍ فَمَاتَ فَلَا يُلْقَى مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ، وَلَا تُهْرِقْهُ وَكُلْهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: مَا الْجُعَلُ ؟ قَالَ: الدَّابَّةُ السُّودُ الَّذِي يَجْعَلُ الْخُرْءَ
Translation
✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: A dung beetle dying in honey, or butter, or rendered fat, or water. He said: It is only a small creature with no flesh and no blood. If it falls into something solid or not solid and dies, none of it is discarded, and do not pour it out—eat it. I said to him: What is a dung beetle? He said: The black creature that rolls dung.
