✧ The Time of the Late Evening Prayer

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: قَالَ عَطَاءٌ:
أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَهَا إِمَامًا أَوْ خِلْوًا أُؤَخِّرَهَا كَمَا صَلَّاهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَيْلَةً، فَإِنْ شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى النَّاسِ فَصَلِّهَا وَسَطًا، لَا مُعَجَّلَةً، وَلَا مُؤَخَّرَةً، قُلْتُ: فَإِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ كَتَبَ إِلَى عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بِكِتَابٍ شَدِيدٍ يَنْهَى فِيهِ أَنْ يُصَلَّى الْعِشَاءُ الْآخِرَةُ حَتَّى يَغِيبَ الشَّفَقُ، وَيَذْكُرُ فِي كِتَابِهِ أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ أُنَاسًا يُصَلُّونَهَا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغِيبَ الشَّفَقُ وَيَأْمُرُهُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ بِأَمْرٍ شَدِيدٍ
Translation
✧ It is dearer to me that I pray it as an imam or alone by delaying it as the Prophet ﷺ prayed it one night. If that is difficult for you and for the people, then pray it in the middle, neither too early nor too late. I said: Umar b. Abd al-Aziz wrote to Abd al-Aziz b. Abd Allah a stern letter forbidding the late evening prayer (isha) from being prayed until the twilight (shafaq) disappears. He mentioned in his letter that it had reached him that some people pray it before the twilight disappears, and he commanded them in that matter with a stern command.
