✧ Bones of the Elephant

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: الدَّابَّةُ الَّتِي تَكُونُ مِنْهَا مُشْطُ الْعَاجِ يُؤْخَذُ مَيْتَةً فَيُجْعَلُ مِنْهَا مَسَكٌ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُذْبَحُ قَالَ: لَا، ثُمَّ أَذْكَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّهَا مِنْ دَوَابِّ الْبَحْرِ مِمَّا يُلْقِيهَا، قَالَ: فَهِيَ مِمَّا يُلْقِي الْبَحْرُ
Translation
✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: "The animal from which ivory combs are made is taken dead, and bracelets are made from it, for it is not slaughtered." He said: "No." Then I reminded him and said: "It is a sea creature from what the sea casts up." He said: "Then it is among what the sea casts up."
