✧ Bones of the Elephant

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: عِظَامُ الْفِيلِ، فَإِنَّهُ زَعَمُوا الْأَنْصَابَ عِظَامَهَا، وَهِيَ مَيْتَةٌ، قَالَ: فَلَا يُسْتَمْتَعُ بِهَا قُلْتُ: وَعِظَامُ الْمَاشِيَةِ الْمَيِّتَةِ كَذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ قُلْتُ: أَيُجْعَلُ فِي عِظَامِ الْمَيْتَةِ شَيْءٌ يُحْوَ فِيهِ ؟ قَالَ: لَا

Translation

✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: "The bones of the elephant—for they claimed that the anṣāb are its bones, and it is a dead animal." He said: "No use is to be made of them." I said: "And likewise the bones of livestock that die?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Should anything be put in the bones of a dead animal to hold something?" He said: "No."
