ʿAṭāʾ said to me, when I asked him: "If there are two Christians [spouses] and both of them become Muslim [1] and they have young children, and then their children die while owning property, their Muslim father does not inherit from them, but their mother inherits from them, and whatever remains goes to the people of their religion." I said: "They are young children, they have no religion." He said: "But they were born into Christianity, upon Christianity." And he once said to me: "The Muslim inherits from them, as he would inherit from his two parents." And I do not know but that he said: "Their young child inherits from them both, and they both inherit from him, until a religion unites them or separates them." And I mentioned the two of them to ʿAmr b. Dīnār. I said: "His parents are Christians?" He said: "I would give their property to their child." I said to ʿAmr: "How so, when the child is upon the fiṭrah?" He said: "Then why are the children of the polytheists taken captive, when they are upon the fiṭrah and are Muslims?" So I fell silent.
