Translation

✧ The first call of the adhan is only to notify the people. He said: It is a binding duty that is indispensable, and it is not permissible otherwise. When one hears the adhan, he must come and attend the prayer. Then he told me about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: What is the matter with men who hear the call to prayer and then stay behind? I was determined to establish the prayer and then no one would stay away from it except that I would burn his house, or burn it down upon him. A man came to him and said: O Prophet of Allah, I am blind and it is hard for me not to attend the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: Attend it. He said: I am blind, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Do you hear the call? He said: Yes. He said: Then attend it. I said: What was his impairment? He said: I think he was blind or had weak eyesight, and he asked for a concession regarding the night prayer. Ibn Jurayj said: Someone I trust told me that the man was Ibn Umm Maktum.
