Some men from Banū Fazārah came to the Prophet ﷺ, having nearly died from emaciation. The Prophet ﷺ ordered that they be taken to his milch camels so that they might drink from them until they recovered. Then they went out early against his milch camels and stole them. They were pursued, and were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he cut off their hands and their feet, and gouged out their eyes." Abū Hurayrah said: "Then this verse was revealed concerning them: ﴿إِنَّمَا جَزَاءُ الَّذِينَ يُحَارِبُونَ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ﴾." He said: "After that, the Prophet ﷺ gave up gouging out eyes."
